Libros / Books: My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult

¡Hola!

Sinopsis:

Hi!
I'm back again to tell you about my latest read. As you may gather from the title, I read the book in the original English language, though it has been translated to many different languages, including Spanish.

Excerpt:

Anna Fitzgerald is not sick, though it might seem that way. At age 13, she's undergone countless surgeries, procedures and transfusions to help her elder sister Kate beat the leukemia she's been fighting since she was 2. Anna was genetically engineered to be the perfect donor for Kate and this is what her life has been about from the moment she was born.

Like most teenagers, Anna is beginning to question who she really is. But unlike others, she has always been defined by what she is to Kate. Despite the fact that she has never fought against the role she had to play in life, she has now made a decision that most people would not even dare contemplate. This decision will tear her family apart and may have disastrous consequences for her elder sister, a sister she loves very much.

There's a film version of this novel I'd watched already, with Abigail Breslin starring as Anna and Sofia Vassilieva (from the 'Medium' CBS drama) starring as Kate. However, having watched the film did not detract interest from reading this novel.
In fact, the unexpected 'plot bomb' at the end differred greatly from the film, going in a different direction from it entirely.

I liked this book, even if it was a tear jerker at times. She doesn't shy away from controversial issues such as 'designer babies'. I specially liked the way the writer told the story from the perspective of all the characters in the novel, which imo made it somewhat unique. The author provided enough insight into the characters and their reactions, which is something authors tend to neglect.

A highly recommended read, as long as you keep a stock of tissues handy for the last few pages.
